New Yorkers offer mixed reviews on government consolidation

ALBANY — New Yorkers have conflicting opinions on consolidating local governments, according to a Marist poll released Tuesday. They support it when they think it would save money but oppose it when it they believe it would give them less say in local decisions.
The extensive Marist poll of 4,500 New Yorkers is the first one statewide to dig deeply into how residents view government consolidation. The initiative, led by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, has led to bitter battles within some Rochester-area communities and elsewhere.
